It shouldn’t have surprised me that the room was empty when I got out of the shower. I really should have guessed that Skylar’s odd behavior all day had everything to do with what happened after I stepped out of the realty office. The fact that I held a one-sided conversation through the bathroom door for five minutes before I figured out no one was on the other side pissed me off.

I was fed up by the time I’d called through all of my contacts for the fifth time this afternoon. Every time I thought I might be onto something, a door would get slammed in my face and I’d be right back where I started. Sauters and Vanderbilt were probably still in this town, but I’d be damned if I could find them. They could be sitting in the next bungalow and I’d never find them.

The early part of our day was a bust. Vanderbilt hadn’t been at his lake house, but I never really expected he’d just sit there and wait around for me to come pick him up. The early morning humidity didn’t help my mood any. Even dressed in cargo shorts and a golf shirt, I was miserable.

Even before Price opened his eyes he knew he was alone in the house. The summer sun was streaming through the window, warming his bare skin. The street was crowded, far too crowded to tell which way Sauters had gone. Part of me wondered if Skylar had imagined the whole thing, but the way every drop of blood drained from her face was enough to make me check it out. Besides, it seemed like the kind of stunt he’d pull.
