The street was crowded, far too crowded to tell which way Sauters had gone. Part of me wondered if Skylar had imagined the whole thing, but the way every drop of blood drained from her face was enough to make me check it out. Besides, it seemed like the kind of stunt he’d pull.

Tension filled the air as Price stared into the drink Yvonne had given him. Her eyes were on him, taking in his silence. Though he’d emptied half the glass’s contents down his throat, he didn’t have a clue what it was. Nothing registered in his mind except for the fact he’d just seen Skylar in the arms of another man. Jenna could have kicked herself for saying anything. Trista had asked if the big smile was because Lana was home and it would have been so easy to just say yes. Instead, she’d spilled her guts about everything, starting with Jackson’s strange behavior over the last few weeks and ending with their parking lot escapades. I spent the better part of the day pretending to work on my case. Looking busy was actually more work than being busy. Brandon wasn’t thrilled with me, but at least he had an office he could hide in while he played solitaire. When I’d pushed all the paperwork I could, I let myself into his office and made myself comfy while he finished a game.

Last night made something very clear to me. I needed a plan. Now that Lana was safe and back where she belonged, I pretty much had the green light for popping the question. Well, I did still have to leave town with Skylar to wrap up my case, but at least I didn’t have a red light anymore.

We found Banks sitting in a bed looking thoroughly annoyed when we got to the hospital. She had a sling on her left shoulder, a busted lip, and some bruises on her face and arms. Other than that, she looked like it could have been a lot worse than it was. Some people might actually be counting their blessings that they hadn’t been killed instead of scowling at every hospital employee that walked by.

Sara ducked into the bathroom to get away from all the chaos outside. This was possibly the worst party she’d ever been to. Why couldn’t she just have one normal conversation without things turning strange?

The smart thing to do would be to get out there to help keep everyone in line. The chances of Nika truly having things under control were slim at best. Right now, there was too much tension swimming between too many different people for her to be on top of things. She’d need Sara’s help.
But Sara didn’t hurry.
Another knock at the door. Skylar felt as though she were on a rollercoaster. Each time someone showed up at her door, her heart hoped it was Price. About half the time it was because she wanted to deck him for lying to her and leaving her; the other half she desperately missed him and would give almost anything to have him back. Skylar was still amazed she’d managed to make it home from the doctor’s office without causing a wreck. She was a mess. The doctor’s news shouldn’t have taken her as much by surprise as it did; she should have guessed it to be the case. She just hadn’t.

Skylar couldn’t concentrate on anything Reyna was saying. She never should have accepted her brunch invitation and she knew it. It was simply too hard to go through the motions of her life with the constant knowledge that Agent Caldwell could take her away at any moment.
