The early part of our day was a bust. Vanderbilt hadn’t been at his lake house, but I never really expected he’d just sit there and wait around for me to come pick him up. The early morning humidity didn’t help my mood any. Even dressed in cargo shorts and a golf shirt, I was miserable.

Certainty is one of those elusive things that probably didn’t exist outside of fiction – or at least that’s what Price had been telling himself ever since he got into his car. Price’s call to Skylar had been futile. Actually, he’d tried to reach her several times over the course of the day to no avail. At first, he’d just thought she wasn’t picking up because he’d blocked the caller ID. He’d then tried to call her from his land line. When he still didn’t get a response, he found the cell phone he used when he was with her, charged it briefly and tried again.

Skylar couldn’t stop thinking about the cell phone that was still sitting on her coffee table. Even after hours on the road her mind kept wondering who called. It hadn’t been Price; logically she knew that was true. In her heart, she hoped she was wrong.
