My plan fell apart before it even got started. Everything had been in place. The restaurant confirmed my reservation, the ring was in my suit jacket in the car and I’d gone over what I was going to say to Jenna at least a thousand times since that morning. Every single angle was covered.

Jenna was still grinning from our morning in bed as we took the familiar drive home from Elaine’s house that night. It took Sara another ten minutes after Nika left to screw up enough courage to leave the bathroom in search of Michael. For all she knew, he’d already left with Jess. I realized I was alone in bed before I opened my eyes. A quick glance at the clock revealed it was still a few hours before the alarm was set to go off. My first thought was that Price left without me, but that was silly since I could smell the coffee brewing in the kitchen. Besides, we had agreed the night before that there would be no more discussion about it.

I watched from the counter as Price washed the dishes after our meal. My feet swung restlessly over the edge, occasionally banging into the cabinets as I waited for him to finish. He dropped the subject of my meeting with Raptor after telling me he was going to prep me for it and I was grateful for that. Outwardly, I could talk a good game, but I knew the truth on the inside. Raptor was a hardcore killer and I was way out of my league. Despite what I said, I wasn’t ready.

My house was empty when I got home from the bank. I didn’t know where the others went, but I was grateful for the peace and quiet. The encounter with Michael was more unsettling to me than I expected. Knowing what he was trying to do all this time made it even more difficult to steal from him – especially now that he knew I was up to something. [Read more...]
I normally liked to attend a power yoga class on Sunday mornings, but I was still in bed after three that afternoon. Fighting – among other things – with Parker had taken a lot out of me and I was exhausted. Besides, I reasoned I’d already gotten in my workout for the day.
