Price’s call to Skylar had been futile. Actually, he’d tried to reach her several times over the course of the day to no avail. At first, he’d just thought she wasn’t picking up because he’d blocked the caller ID. He’d then tried to call her from his land line. When he still didn’t get a response, he found the cell phone he used when he was with her, charged it briefly and tried again.

I was in a foul mood by the time I got to Skylar’s townhouse. Jenna said she couldn’t marry me. Did that also mean it was over between us? Would I be coming home to find the locks changed and all my stuff in the lawn? This just couldn’t be the way things ended for us. I’d just have to hurry and wrap up my case so I could get back to Jenna and attempt to make her understand how much I needed her in my life.

Price gazed out across the lake as he walked along the shore, not noticing its beauty. That was something he did quite a bit these days. In the time he’d spent at his lake home, he’d walked this path practically every day. Each day he told himself he had a good life and he should be enjoying it. Though he was arguably the most eligible bachelor in town he still spent all of his evenings alone.

Despite the fact we’d stayed up well into the night, I was still up at sunrise. Nerves. It had to be. After everything that had gone on the night before, I really should have been in bed until at least noon – probably sleeping. But sleep was out of the question. My plan fell apart before it even got started. Everything had been in place. The restaurant confirmed my reservation, the ring was in my suit jacket in the car and I’d gone over what I was going to say to Jenna at least a thousand times since that morning. Every single angle was covered.

Skylar hated the Fourth of July and she especially hated the fact she had to wait until afterwards to start making some progress in her life. She knew it was wrong to be angry at Caldwell for wanting to spend the holiday with his family; she just didn’t care.
