LWLU – That Girl

Sara was starting to lose feeling in her fingers when she heard a commotion coming from the Siskin house. She didn’t have any concept of how long she’d been huddled in the snow by the fence. She only knew it was cold.

“Dude, did you see that? Linc punched his brother so hard that I heard him thud to the ground all the way downstairs.”

“Guess Mike knows better than to interrupt his brother when he’s behind closed doors with a chick now, huh?”

A girl squealed from somewhere in the distance, “Omigod! Get away from my friend. She’s not going anywhere with you. Billy! Help!”

At least one girl would be safe from Ted tonight. If only Sara could move, maybe someone could help her too.

Whatever action was going on in the house had clearly moved to the front because Sara couldn’t make out voices anymore. It got so quiet in the cold night that she was startled to hear two new voices in the backyard.

“I can’t believe I just became that girl. I’m finally glad I don’t go to school with you anymore.”

“What girl? What are you talking about?”

“You know, that girl that has sex with guys at parties.”

Paul’s voice was quiet when he spoke, “I wasn’t aware it was multiple guys. I thought it was just me.”

“Well…yeah. Obviously. I just meant…Everyone’s going to be talking about it on Monday.”

“And I’ll tell them it’s none of their business when I hear it.”

“It won’t matter. People love juicy gossip. You hooking up with some random out of town girl is going to…”

“You’re not some random girl, Carly. You know that.”

“So, can we be done with all this breaking up stuff now?”

“Fuck.” There were several moments of silence. “I feel like a scumbag now.”

Confusion entered Carly’s voice. “I don’t understand.”

“It sounds a lot like you only slept with me because you thought that’s why we broke up.”

“Well…it wasn’t the only reason. I’d wanted to do that for a while, but it just always seemed like there was plenty of time so I didn’t see the point in rushing before.” She sighed. “And then with all the stuff that happened with your family…I don’t know. I didn’t want to confuse things, I guess. But I never didn’t want to sleep with you. If that makes sense.”

“In a way. I guess. So…you aren’t regretting it? Even though it makes you that girl?”

Sara was able to look up in time to see the blonde shrug. “Naw. It’s not like we live in the Bible or anything. I probably won’t get stoned by the town over it.”

Good for Paul. They made such a cute couple. It almost seemed wrong to interrupt them, but Sara could feel a fresh wave of drowsiness washing over here. This could be her last chance to get someone’s attention before Sucre or Ted came looking for her.

“So, are you driving home tonight? I can follow you to make sure you get home okay.”

“You don’t need to do that Paul.”

“I don’t like the idea of you making a six-hour drive when it’s already this late. It’s not safe.”

“Actually, my cousin is spending the night at a friend’s house because my aunt and uncle are out of town.” Carly fiddled with the collar of his shirt. “I was thinking maybe we could spend the night there. Alone.”

His lips brushed over hers briefly. “We?”

“Yeah, I mean, if you don’t think you’ll get in too much trouble for staying out all night.”

Paul laughed. “When have I ever gotten in trouble for that before?”

“Yes, it really is disgusting how much your mother trusts you. Why can’t my parents be more like that? They freak out if I’m thirty seconds past curfew.”

He slung his arm around her shoulder and they started towards the alley. “Well, you are the girl who goes to out of town parties to have sex with guys.”

She rammed her elbow playfully into his ribs. “Keep it up, Kellerman, and you can sleep on the couch.”

“It’ll still put me closer to you than I’ve gotten to be in months now. I’m okay with that.”

Carly stopped in her tracks. “Do you really mean that? You’d sleep on the couch just to be in the same house with me?”

He turned to her. “Yeah, I really would.” He circled her waist with his arms to pull her close. “I wasn’t lying before when I told you I loved you, Carly. It wasn’t some kind of a line, if that’s what you thought.”

“Paul,” Sara murmured, wondering if her voice would ever stop sounding so willowy.

“I never thought it was a line. I know you better than that. You aren’t that guy.”

“Paul,” she called out again. “Help me.”

“It’s good to know you don’t think I’m just using you.” He brushed a wind-tangled strand of blonde hair out of her face. “And just so you know, I really thought I was doing the right thing when I broke up with you. It killed me to think you might be dating other guys, but I couldn’t let myself be selfish.”

She kissed him. “I won’t complain if you’re a little more selfish in that area, okay?”

“Please, help me.”

Paul pulled away and looked around. “Did you hear something?”

“You mean besides drunk people in the house? No.”

“Paul…”

“I could’ve sworn I just heard my name.”

“It was the wind.” She grinned at him. “Look, I know we have all night, but let’s not act like we have all night. It’s cold out here. Let’s go.”

“Okay.” He locked fingers with her and they turned toward the alley again.

“Don’t go,” Sara called with every ounce of strength she had.

Paul stopped, releasing Carly’s hand in the process. “That definitely wasn’t the wind. It sounded like…” He surveyed the frozen yard and his eyes widened. “Sara?”

Always good to see a familiar face around here. :) New installments go live every Sunday. Might do extra postings once the other story wraps up. Not sure yet.

If you are going to read any of the other stuff, I recommend starting with The Freelancer. It’s the first book in the series I’ve been posting on here. We’re almost done with the third book, so there should be no shortage of stuff to read.

I am so relieved Paul heard her! Now he needs to get her the heck out of there! Sorry Carly! But I know more bad stuff happens so it won’t be quite that simple…

Ah…Lincoln punching Mike…good good…night is moving along…maybe soon we will know what the heck is going on….or maybe not…lol

Well, let’s just say a big question is going to get answered in the next chapter. Probably not the big question you’ve been waiting for, but still a pretty big plot reveal. ;)
