The Freelancer – Chapter 80
Friday, October 10
As soon as I saw the look on Collin’s face, I knew my decision to stay in bed with Jenna longer than usual this morning was a poor one. At only a quarter till ten, it looked like we’d suffered some new setback. I braced myself for what was to come.
“Would you like to know why we haven’t heard back from McNamara?”
Collin didn’t wait for a response…or take a breath.
“He wasn’t in a meeting. He’s not even in the state. He had to attend a funeral for a co-worker in Denver yesterday. When’s he coming back? We don’t know because the airport is snowed in.”
“This isn’t good news,” I said, doing my damnedest to remain calm.
“No, it isn’t. We can’t monitor the entire airport for one man. Game over, don’t pass go, don’t collect your money because innocent people are going to die!”
Collin was on the verge of a nervous breakdown. I was maybe five minutes behind him. I shoved him into the first empty room I saw and shut the door behind us. There had to be more to this than I knew.
“We’ll come up with a Plan B and go to that. We still have forty-eight hours to narrow it down. You know he’ll call his assistant. We’ll let her know that he needs to call us the second she talks to him and…”
“I already did that. I told her exactly what I needed so we could save a step and he could call us once he had it,” Collin interrupted, calmer now.
“I’ll admit that I haven’t worked with you that long, but you’re too agitated by this. Is all this because of a setback, Collin?”
“Maureen’s car was found in a ditch this morning, burnt to a crisp. No body.”
“She could still be alive then. That’s good news, right?”
“That isn’t the point, Jackson. I’m a fucking FBI agent. I should have been able to protect her. I can’t even keep one woman safe. What the hell good am I?”
“What happened to Maureen is not your fault. For all we know, she did this herself and skipped town for some reason. It’s a longshot, but it’s possible. Your attention has been on this case where it belongs. You couldn’t have done anything different and we both know that.”
Collin nodded slowly. “Do me a favor and don’t say anything about this. Trista’s already upset from when I talked to her about it the other night. I don’t want to worry her with this yet.”
“Okay.” An upset Trista might upset Jenna, making it even more difficult to get a read on her. “Are you ready to figure out what our Plan B is?”

Mmmm….Plan B huh!!!! OK…..Nah! I got nothin’….lol…..
Your plots are so creative….It’s such fun to see an update here…
Looking forward to more…….xxxxxx
Don’t feel bad. I doubt Jackson and Collin have any clue about Plan B either.
Glad you’re still enjoying it because we’re in the home stretch now.
More on Monday.
Yay!! …..*is excited* Home stretch you say…..*pouts*…..but there is more though right???
What do you mean? Like, after this story ends? If that’s the case, Freelancer is the first in the series. There are plans for another 5, 3 of which are already written and ready to go.
wow! Things are getting messy!! I can’t wait to see what the plan is!
Yes hun, that is what I meant. 3 of which are already written……gotta love that!!!!
Thank you!!!!
The plan? What…they have to actually come up with a plan? Crap. I thought I could just cut the scene and Jackson could go back to freaking out about Jenna being a terrorist.
Hmm…Guess I’d better hurry and come up with a freakin’ plan before Monday.
Deb – 3 are written, but don’t get too excited yet. Book 3 and 4 are basically good to go, but the next one appears to need some major rewrites. Good thing I post a chapter at a time…
But I’ll probably start posting the teasers once we hit the last week or two of posts on this one…
