The Freelancer – Chapter 70

At ten o’clock, Jenna knocked on my door.  I debated whether or not to let her in, and scolded myself for even having the thought.  Over the past hour it finally occurred to me how much easier this made things.  I spent too much time being concerned with how she would react once she found out I was with the FBI, but none of that mattered anymore.  Now that I knew the truth about her, her feelings were off the table.  I couldn’t toy with Blackstone, but she was fair game.

Besides, I needed to tap her cell phone.

“I thought you were writing,” I said once I opened the door.

She gave me a quick kiss and walked past me to the living room where she sat.

“That’s not much of greeting.  What’s wrong with you,” she asked.

I hadn’t meant that to come out as harsh as it did.

“Sorry.  Work stuff.”  At least that was the truth.

“I know the feeling.  This book is driving me insane.  I had the worst case of writer’s block all day.”

“I’m sorry to hear that.  Can I help?”

“No.  I spent the day at the library reading some of the books that inspired me when I was a kid.”

Lying bitch!

“Did that help?”

“I think so.  I feel ready to write, but I wanted to see you first.”

“Why?”

She looked surprised.  “I missed you.  I hoped that maybe you wanted to get something to eat.”

“I already ate.”

“Oh.”  She snuggled up close and whispered in my ear, “Can I interest you in some dessert then.”

I knew what she was getting at, but it was out of the question, for tonight, at the very least.  My emotions were too raw right now.  I would have to get them in check first.

“No.”

She pulled away and looked at me.  “Are you sure I can’t tempt you?”

She had a hint of pain in her voice.  I felt a twinge of guilt over hurting her, but I squashed it.  She was good at this little game.

I was better.

“I’ve got a lot to finish before tomorrow and I have an early morning.  I’m sorry.”

Jenna jumped up.  “That’s okay.  I understand.  You warned me up front you had a busy week.  I should probably write anyway.  I guess I’ll see you.” She didn’ take a single breath when she spoke.

In her haste to leave, she grabbed her keys and purse, but left her cell phone.

Score.
