The Freelancer – Chapter 66

“What are you doing here, Jen?  I wasn’t expecting to see you until the weekend,” Elaine said in surprise, hugging her sister.

“I’m sorry to pop over like this, but Jackson and I have dinner plans.  I was hoping you’d let me raid your closet,” Jenna lied.

“Of course, sweetie.  I was about to make a few phone calls for the Cancer Society fundraiser, so you go ahead and help yourself to whatever you need.”

Jenna watched Elaine disappear into the study and shut the door behind her.  Lying to her sister wasn’t something she was in the habit of doing.  It left a hollow feeling in her stomach as she opened the closet door.

Jenna went through the pockets of all of Daniel’s uniforms hanging in the closet to no avail.  She began to panic.  She had to have it for tonight.  For Lana’s sake.

Thinking of all Lana was the only thing that kept her sane during this insanity. Something bad would happen regardless of what she did, but in one scenario that something didn’t happen to her niece. She couldn’t think about what happened after she delivered the security badge. It would only prompt a breakdown. That couldn’t happen. Not yet.

Not until after.

In sheer desperation, Jenna crossed the room to the dresser and began searching through the drawers.  Nothing.  Then it occurred to her that he might keep it in his car since he needed it when he flew

Jenna crept up to the study and pressed her ear to the door.  From what she heard, she knew Elaine would be on the phone for quite a while.  She tiptoed through the kitchen into the laundry room and opened the door to the garage.

Luck was on Jenna’s side.  The car was unlocked, but a quick search didn’t yield any results.  His badge wasn’t in the glove box, the center console, or behind either of the visors.  As a last resort, Jenna felt under the seats.

Bingo!  She found it under the passenger seat and slipped it into her purse.

“What the hell are you doing, Jenna?” a booming voice questioned from behind her.
