“Caldwell, please tell me I didn’t hear you correctly,” Banks said, fighting to remain calm.
“I can’t do that.”
“Okay, we’re going to play a little game. Let’s pretend I’m your boss for a second. Oh, wait; no…I am your boss. New game: explain to me why in the fuck there isn’t a wire tap on her phone!”
“I’ve been with her non-stop this entire weekend and I’m telling you she doesn’t know anything. Blackstone is fixated on her, but that’s as far as it goes.”
“Look, Caldwell, you need to start thinking from above your waist. I am not happy to hear that Blackstone already knows we’re watching him. If he can figure it out, why couldn’t she? How do you know they haven’t been in cahoots the entire time?”
“Because I know her.”
“You know what she wants you to know and nothing more. This would not be the first time a woman hopped into bed with an agent to throw him off the scent.” Her voice was as cold as ice when she spoke.
I remained silent. Nothing I could say would matter, even if I had words for this.
“Good, I see I have your attention now, Caldwell. Let me make this crystal clear for you. I’ve tolerated your insubordination thus far because I like you; you were one of my best agents before your home life turned to shit. If those wiretaps are not on her phones by the end of today, I will have you removed from the case. I will have you locked up. I will have you charged with aiding a terrorist and obstructing an investigation.”
“You can’t do that and…”
“Don’t underestimate me, Caldwell. Trust me when I tell you that you don’t want to call this bluff. I’m well connected and I can have you locked up for the rest of your life with one phone call. Get it done!”
After I hung up the phone, I relayed the conversation to Collin.
“I’ve never worked for the woman, Jackson, but everyone in my office knows of her. She isn’t bluffing.”
“I know,” I said. “Do you think she’s right? Am I being played?”
He shrugged. “Only Jenna can answer that for you.”
“You know I can’t ask her.”
“No, you can’t. Not without blowing you cover, anyway. Do you want me to have her followed?”
I couldn’t believe I was considering this. Collin was suggesting I have the woman I loved followed like a common criminal. Then again, her wounded dove demeanor could all be a carefully constructed ruse. Fuck me. At least I didn’t have the opportunity to come clean with her yet. Maybe having her followed would give me the peace of mind I needed to fess up.
“Jackson?”
I nodded. “Phone it in.”

ahhh!! Can’t wait to see what happens. I hope Jenna’s neice doesn’t get hurt!!
Hmm…you know I’d never let a kid get hurt.
But that’s in real life, so it’s probably not quite the same, now is it?
On no!!! I can see why Jackson didn’t want to have anyone else privvy to their relationship, but man….if he had followed those earlier orders, he would now know what poor Jenna is up against………
Looking foward to tomorrow…….*hugs*
Yep. That little problem with authority seems to be coming back to bite him in the ass now…But at least they’ll be able to help her if she gets any more of those calls, right?
