The Freelancer – Chapter 62

“Chad, what are you doing here?”

“Do I need a reason to come by and see how the best Nana in the world was doing.”

“Oh, you’re an angel, but then again, you always were.”  Chad’s elderly grandmother wrapped him in a frail embrace.  “I wish you called first.  I’ve got to get to the church.  I’m helping to organize our annual rummage sale for the homeless this year.”

You should organize a fundraiser for yourself, Chad thought bitterly as he looked at the dilapidated hovel in which she lived.

“Don’t worry, Nana.  I was in the area running an errand anyway.”

“You’re such a sweet boy,” she said, disappearing into her house, presumably to collect her keys and handbag.  Chad wandered over to the corner of her tiny yard while he waited.

Chad stuffed his hands in his pockets.  “I’ll bring Jenna by soon, Nana.  I promise.  She’s been busy lately with all of the wedding plans.”

“I always liked that Jenna.  I knew God would send an angel to watch over you for me.  I won’t always be here, you know,” she mused as she got in her car.

“No more talk of that, Nana.  You’ll outlive us all yet.”

“I don’t know about that, but, the good lord willing, I’ll be here long enough to see you married.”

“I love you, Nana, and I promise to bring Jenna over next week to see you,” Chad said as he closed her door for her.

He watched as her car vanished down the street.  Every time he visited, he was reminded of his painful teenage years in that house, not that any of it was her fault.  Soon enough, he would have his revenge and the woman he loved.  Life would be perfect for him at last.  He would see to that.

Chad had what he’d come for.
