The Freelancer – Chapter 40

Thursday, October 2

“That’s pretty weak, Jenna, but I’ll see if I can use it,” Maureen said after Jenna explained the reason she was at her office.

Jenna sighed.  “I know, but it could be something.  It could, at least, be reasonable doubt.”

Maureen nodded.  “I’ll have one of my investigators check Victor out.  I’ll let you know if it turns into anything.”

Jenna stood.  “Okay.  I just hope it helps.”

“Not so fast, Jenna.  While I have you in my office I want to talk to you.”

Jenna sank back down into the chair.  “What about?”

“When are you going to stop messing around and take the Bar?  You have a knack for this, you know.”

They’d been having this same discussion from the first day they’d met and Jenna was sick of it.  Why couldn’t people understand she was doing what she wanted to be doing with her life?  She was grateful when her cell phone rang.

“Hello.”

“Jenna, its Chad.  I’m up on your side of the world and I was hoping you might be available for lunch.”

Jenna wasn’t in the mood to catch up with old friends, but anything had to be better than getting interrogated by Maureen for the thousandth time.

“Sounds good.  Where are you?”

“Keller Springs and the Tollway…I think,” he answered uncertainly.

“Okay.  There’s a Mexican restaurant there.  I can meet you in about fifteen minutes,” Jenna offered.

“I see it.  I’ll see you then,” Chad said before ending the call.

Jenna turned to Maureen and shrugged.  “I’m sorry, but I couldn’t get out of that.  We’ll have to finish this conversation another time.”

“Oh, we will.”
