The Freelancer – Chapter 33

Tuesday, September 30

“What the hell is wrong with me, Trista?” Jenna demanded of her friend as soon as she arrived the next morning.

“Besides the fact that you have no idea how to greet a friend at the door without sounding like a crazy person, I think you’re great, sweetie.  Why don’t you take a step back and tell me what you’re talking about.” Trista set down a large stack of files on Jenna’s desk.

Jenna relayed the events of the previous evening, leaving nothing out so she could appreciate how wronged she’d been.  When she was done, she stared at her friend, waiting for some insight that would make her feel better; or at the very least, justified in her anger.  Trista looked at her for a long moment before she spoke.

“Is it possible that he really did have an early morning meeting?”

“Probably; his car was gone when I got up this morning, but that doesn’t mean anything.”

“Starting to like the guy?  I’d say you’re passed that one already.  Talk to him the next time you see him.  Keeping things open is the way to go.”

Jenna rolled her eyes and let out a sigh.  “I think I miss the old, cynical Trista.  What did you do with her?”

“I told her exactly what I’m going to tell you now.  I told her to grow up and go through that stack of files on the desk before I kick your butt.”

Jenna let a smile play at the corner of her mouth.  “You told her that, huh?”

“Tough love, baby.  Get to work.”

They both enjoyed a laugh before getting into the case.  Jenna soon realized her condo had become their base of operations, which was even more evident when Maureen showed up around one o’clock with two more boxes of files.  She hadn’t understood how much help they needed when she agreed, but she couldn’t quit now.  Sydney the Curious Kitty would have to wait for a few more days; some things were just more important.
