The Freelancer – Chapter 26
Jenna didn’t really know what she’d been expecting, but she knew that she was disappointed. They had stopped for lunch before they attempted to shop for anything. She had come to realize over the past few days that Jackson was a wonderful conversationalist so none of the usual uncomfortable silences interrupted them. Most people considered that a good thing, but she couldn’t help remembering a pearl of her mother’s sage wisdom that had been imparted on her after a quiet first date. Though she couldn’t remember the exact words, she knew it was something to the effect that a quiet date meant the guy was nervous and she’d get called to go out again.
As usual, her mother was right, but that didn’t help her now. Jenna had to accept the fact that she might have scared him off the first night with her behavior. It was entirely possible he was only interested in her friendship.
She decided to take it all in stride as they left the restaurant. The parking lot to the store they decided to try was crowded, but Jackson was able to find a spot close enough to the door that they weren’t in the back 40. Jenna pushed everything out of her mind except for maneuvering through the crowds to the section of the store that had all of the kitchen essentials.
They were looking at cookware when a voice from behind them startled her.
“Jenna Monroe, is that you?”
“Oh, my God. Chad, I haven’t seen you in forever.”
With a warm smile brightening her face, Jenna embraced her old friend.
