When I got back to headquarters I found Brandon rummaging around in the reception area. He kept muttering under his breath so I guess he wasn’t having much luck in finding whatever he was looking for. “Everything all right, Dinsley?”
He scowled at me. “I called the school back and they gave me the tracking number. When I called on that I was told that someone here signed for it and never bothered to deliver the package. It has to be here somewhere, Caldwell.” His scowl became a glare. “Don’t just stand there grinning at me like an idiot. Help me look.”
“I’ve got the name so you might as well stop looking.”
He continued to glare at me as we walked to his office. Once the door was closed he demanded, “How long have you had that information?”
“Skylar called when I was outside with Jenna. I just came from meeting her to get the information.”
“You should have let me know what was going on sooner.” He rolled his eyes. “Let’s have the name.”
“Price Ramsey Vanderbilt III.”
“That’s not funny.”
“Good because it isn’t a joke.”
Dinsley sat slowly. “So a Vanderbilt robbed a bank? His lawyers will keep this tied up for the rest of our lives.”
“It gets better.”
“Great.”
“Sauters is his brother.”
Dinsley swore softly under his breath. “So they’re both untouchable.”
I shook my head. “Not necessarily. I get the impression there’s some kind of a rivalry between them.”
“Wonderful.” He started typing commands on his keyboard. “Maybe Vanderbilt has been using his credit cards.”
I doubted that, but didn’t say anything until after my suspicion was proven correct. “I didn’t think he’d be that easy to track.”
Dinsley rubbed his temples. “Did Skylar have any idea where he was?”
“No. She only gave me the name so that I’d help her track him down.”
“I’ve known her longer than you have. Trust me when I tell you, Caldwell, this is one vengeful lover you don’t want to get mixed up with.”
I thought about that. “I don’t get the impression that she’s all that vengeful right now.”
“Hmm. Let me know how that theory works out for you.” He stood up. “Let’s go back and chat with Covington. I would bet my life that he knows where Vanderbilt is.”
“Not so fast,” I warned, also standing. “I’ve got to leave Covington and the girl out of it.”
“You’re walking a fine line with this. I hope you know what you’re doing.”
“Dinsley…”
I didn’t get the opportunity to respond because his office door was flung open. Sherry burst through it and took just a moment to catch her breath. Something was clearly wrong. I’d never known her to break a sweat or have a hair out of place.
“Good…You’re both here.” She paused to clear her throat. “You need to come with me right now. I’ll brief you on the way.”
