The day went by far too fast for me. Collin and I agreed to meet one last time to go over our plan in the light of day. It held up to our scrutiny and we were satisfied we were doing the right thing. Several members of the clerical staff stayed all night, but still hadn’t come up with anything. They had a stack of paperwork left to go through, but there was still a chance they could come up with something in time. Read more »

It was well past eight o’clock before we had, what we hoped, was our Plan B. We knew Blackstone could strike at any time on Sunday, so we’d have to be ready for him tomorrow. It was a long shot, but I thought our plan just might work. Read more »

As soon as I saw the look on Collin’s face, I knew my decision to stay in bed with Jenna longer than usual this morning was a poor one. At only a quarter till ten, it looked like we’d suffered some new setback. I braced myself for what was to come. Read more »

Jenna’s behavior at dinner surprised me. Over the past few days, a fog settled around her, swallowing every shred of personality. But tonight she was alive. She was the woman I loved again. Read more »

Trista looked up from her stack of filing when she heard the door open. She’d hoped it would be Maureen, but she’d hoped that every time the door to the law office opened over the last four days. Client complaints were piling up and the other partners of the firm were ready to vote Maureen out if she didn’t have a damn good reason for abandoning her work the way she had. Read more »

I was glad the profilers kept the same insane hours I did. They thought what Eddie said was crucial. As I’d expected, they said it fit the profile. They also felt it gave us a new direction to explore. Read more »

Jenna was disappointed to find Jackson missing when she returned home, but his note cheered her up some. She knew she needed more time to come up with a reason for leaving so early in the morning. Even after thinking about it the whole drive home the best she could come up with was that she’d gone to the gym, not that she belonged to one. Read more »

I knocked on Jenna’s door slightly past seven. I took Collin’s words to heart. It was all for the best, but that didn’t make it any easier. My heart didn’t have an off switch the way hers did. Read more »

“I just don’t get it,” Jenna complained after they ordered lunch.
“Get what?” Trista asked.
“Jackson. This whole weekend was perfect, but he was completely cold to me last night. I don’t understand what I did to piss him off.” Read more »

At ten o’clock, Jenna knocked on my door. I debated whether or not to let her in, and scolded myself for even having the thought. Over the past hour it finally occurred to me how much easier this made things. I spent too much time being concerned with how she would react once she found out I was with the FBI, but none of that mattered anymore. Now that I knew the truth about her, her feelings were off the table. I couldn’t toy with Blackstone, but she was fair game. Read more »

After assuring Trista we would find Maureen, she left to go back to work in case she called. Collin left right after that to get a team briefed about the disappearance. I tried to spend the rest of the afternoon looking over the maps I had of the airport to determine the best placement of agents, but I couldn’t concentrate.
At eight o’clock that night, Jenna still hadn’t returned home. Read more »
