Alliance – Chapter 99

Saturday, April 3

Trevor was still shaken after the previous day’s meeting with the FBI agents. Arthur Pintauro, the man he had once been, was dead as far as he was concerned and that life was in the distant past. There was only one person in this town who was supposed to know the truth about him; only one person who he had told the whole story to.

Unfortunately, there were two people who knew his secret.

He was set to testify at his final trial in a few months and then he would be able to put the whole ugly mess behind him. The trouble was that he hadn’t bargained on falling in love. Trevor had only meant to pass the time in this town and let himself be relocated again after it was over. Now, he had too much to lose if the FBI found out what he was hiding from them – and they would find out. His lucrative investment holdings, his place in society, his immunity, even the woman he loved could all be taken away from him in the blink of an eye over one mistake he made.

At first, he hadn’t even realized what he did was wrong. It was only after he had taken a deeper look that he discovered its true criminal nature. Trevor had wanted out, had wanted to set things right of course, but then it happened and there was no turning back.

Maybe he could still set things right. It was possible that he could talk to the agents and make them understand why he had done what he’d done. There was a chance he could make them believe he hadn’t intentionally broken the law and that there were very real reasons why he hadn’t come forward sooner.

Yes, he would see them first thing Monday morning, but there was something he had to be sort out first. Trevor reached for the phone and dialed the number he knew by heart, even though he hadn’t called it in years. When he heard the familiar voice on the other end he said, “I need to see you. There’s something we need to discuss.” After the briefest of pauses, “It’s important.”
