Alliance – Chapter 17

As though on cue, Parker returned to the living room.  He shot me a look, but I pretended not to notice.  I wasn’t in the mood to talk about the past anymore.  I’d just vocalized the most painful detail of my father’s murder and I would have to relive another painful portion of the past in a few hours.

How many memories of pain could one person endure before they crumpled? I was just about there…

“What was that all about, Skylar?” he finally asked.

“What was what?”

“Okay, I admit I didn’t have the best viewing angle, but it looked like you just threw yourself at that agent.”

“Jealous?”

He gave me a noncommittal shrug.  “I thought it might be nice to know whether you were planning to work with the other side of the law on this one.”

I smiled, or I got as close to a smile as was possible right now.  “I had to be sure he was on the up and up.  Either he is or he’s gay.  Regardless, I’m not worried about him.”

Parker gave me another strange look.  “What happened to the agent you were talking about?”

“I don’t know.  I always suspected there was something off going on with him, but then he stopped coming around one day.  I didn’t question it since it was a good thing for me.”

“Maybe this new agent will be just what the case needs?”

“I lost my faith in the FBI a long time ago.  I think you and I will find Raptor long before they realize he’s in town.” I paused, remembering he was still here for some unknown purpose.  “What did you want to talk to me about, anyway?”

Parker shrugged.  “It wasn’t that important and I can tell you’re tired.  You should try to get some sleep before your meeting tonight.  You need to be at your best for that.”

He didn’t give me the opportunity to process what he said, much less respond before he left. Given the innuendos he made before the FBI came to play, I didn’t expect him to leave without more of the same. I don’t think Parker even bothered to look me up and down during our brief exchange.

Odd.

Then again, I didn’t know him well enough to read him yet. Maybe he was one of those guys who hit on everything that moved without realizing it. Or maybe he just enjoyed trying to get under my skin by pushing my buttons. If he was as good at what he did as he kept saying, he should already have figured out that the hot-cold routine wasn’t the way to get me into bed.

But he was right about one thing; I was exhausted.  If I crawled into bed now I could get in a decent length nap before I had to face the socialites. And my ex.

I couldn’t say which terrified me more…

Loved how Skylar was testing Jackson! I’m glad I finally got to catch up!

  2. Could be. Hmm…Maybe’s Dinsley’s Raptor. Just sayin’…

Yeah, I can’t say she’s really in an ideal situation right now. A con man traipses into her home whenever he wants to, she was already on RevengeQuest 2010 and now she has to hang out with the one who got away. Doesn’t really sound like a trifecte of things I’d like to converge in my life…

Crazy is a good way to think in this story. Every character I introduce could be Raptor or be working with Raptor. I mean, even Michael could be working an inside job to rob his own bank. Hell, for all Skylar knows, Raptor himself is Chill and has been selling her information about his habits and such.

Ooh…Remember Blaine, who everyone thought was such a good guy, from the first book? He could be Raptor, too. So could Elaine’s no good husband…

As for Jackson, I believe all we know about his activities from 2 years ago is that he was getting divorced around that time. FBI agents get flown around all the time for cases. Could be he WAS in Dallas during that time. And since I’m not first person point of view in Jackson’s head, I don’t have to disclose every little thing he knows or has done. Who’s to say our awesome agent isn’t playing both sides and working with Raptor?

Or *I* could be Raptor. God knows that anyone who worked in a bank as a many years as I did knows dozens of ways to take down a bank without getting caught. (I didn’t…btw.)

But for now, wondering if the ex is a murderer/bank robber is a fun theory. :)
