Alliance – Chapter 12

Jackson waited for his partner to get off the phone.  He’d spent the better part of the morning going over the details of the case until he felt like he had a good handle on the facts, but something about it was still bothering him.  The file had to be incomplete.

“Why were no suspects listed in any of the case files?” Jackson asked as soon as Dinsley hung up the phone.

“We could never substantiate anything and the higher ups didn’t want to risk potential lawsuits.”

Jackson raised an eyebrow.  “Lawsuits?”

“We had a few suspects, but all of them had alibis that checked out.  They were all prominent men in the community, so I had to drop my investigation of them.”

“What kind of evidence did you have on them?”

“Nothing substantial, but it could have been the kicker if we had anything else to corroborate it.  All of the men had large amounts of money deposited into their bank accounts shortly after the robbery.”

“How large are we talking about?” Jackson asked.

“About five million.”

“And I suppose they all had an explanation.”

“Yep.  Drake Wyndham was just made the CEO of First Alliance and had to liquidate his ownership in a limited partnership as one of the conditions.  Trevor Brightman claimed he just collected the rest of his money on a real estate deal.  Eric Sauters put the money into his business account for a customer who wasn’t sure where to put it yet.  They all had the paperwork to back up their claims, but I’ve always thought there was something fishy about the whole situation.”

“Do we know what happened to each of them since the investigation died down?”

“They all still live in the area.  Of course, since we never had anything solid on any of them, there would be no reason for Raptor to relocate. If he is one of those three, of course.”

“There was one other person I wanted to ask you about.  Skylar Montgomery’s name was mentioned throughout the file.  Who is she?”

Dinsley frowned.  “She’s the daughter of the man who was killed during the robbery.  She was upset when our investigation turned up nothing but dead ends and she made that known to anyone who would listen to her.”

“Will she be a problem during this investigation?”

“She shouldn’t be, but I might make a trip out to talk to her in person if I were you,” Dinsley replied.

Jackson got the impression Dinsley wasn’t telling him the whole story, but he decided not to act on it.  A confrontation at this point would be premature, Jackson thought as he left his partner’s office.  He would need to dig up some more details to substantiate his hunch before he said anything.
